WELLINGTON Tennis Club are in the midst of their competitive season in the West Somerset Tennis League.
Playing in Division 1, Wellington A has been the most successful so far with 3 wins and one loss. James Cross, Phil Cookson, Sue Rackley and Elizabeth Deem have defeated Kings College 10-0, Trull B 8-2, Taunton A 6-4 but lost 2-8 against the 2024 Division 1 winners Trull A.
Wellington B play in Division 3 and got off to a great start with a 9-3 win against Trull . However, they have not been able to field the same team. They lost 4-7 against Trull C, 0-10 against Elms A but their match against Taunton B was much closer, losing 4-6.
Altogether, Janet Dobson, Aly Spiller, Jennifer Baker, Greg Sellers, Ash Gaines, Connor Sellick Gabriel Purdey and David Goldsack have played.
Sue Rackley said: "The club has had an influx of new male members who are keen to play matches which has been great news so we needed a men's team this year. "
"It also means many are meeting up to practise together which fosters a good team spirit."
So far. the men's team players have been Malcolm Steer, Iain Stevens, Rich Steiner, Ben Bowley, Ben Angus, Connor Sellick, Musa Sidibeh, Matthew Hitchin and James Brackenbury. They lost their match against Trull C 2-9. In their second match, Musa and Connor won both their rubbers to get 4 sets against Trull D. Away at Minehead, Wellington won 5 sets but Minehead B pipped them at the post with 6.
With the sunny weather in May, the club's online court booking system has been busy and provides a valuable income towards court maintenance.
