Wellington Tennis Club's competitive season is drawing to a close with only one match remaining.

This year, the club decided to field a Men's team in the West Somerset Tennis League and has managed to field a side every match.

The team comprised of a pool of players that has managed to pick up a couple of wins and to gain a decent number of sets in the matches they lost. After eight matches, they picked up 36 points.

Sue Rackley, Chairman, said: “We had a pool of players but fortunately we had a core group that played many matches- Musa Sidebeh, Connor Sellick and Malcolm Steer played 5 matches each and we had ten other men and teenage boys who also played.

“Next year we will field a core group of players for the Men's A team but could even consider fielding a second men's team if players will commit.”

Wellington’s ‘B’ team had gotten promoted from last year’s division four, and have found the matches in this year’s division three a much tougher challenge.

One player has had to step down from the team due to an injury they picked up, while Wellington struggled to find another regular to take over, meaning that it was made harder for partnerships to gel.

Janet Dobson, Greg Sellers and Aly Spiller each played most matches over the course of the season, while the likes of David Goldsack, Ash Gaines, Archie Evans, Ben Bowley, Louusa Raybould and Jennifer Baker all played for the club as well.

It is likely that the ‘B’ will have to feature in a play-off match to see if they can remain in this division for next season.

The 'A' team, playing in Division One, has had a good season with wins against Bridgwater A , Taunton A and Trull B and Kings College. They now have 30 points after gaining nine points in what turned out to be a very closely fought contest against Bridgwater A.

There were three championship tie breaks in the match (played when pairs have a set each) with Wellington winning two of them. James Cross and Liz Deem were down 1-7 but fought back to to win the tie- break. At half time, both teams had three sets apiece.

However the A team’s season did have some down spells as well, including a 10-1 loss away at Taunton A on Saturday July 26 and a 10-0 defeat to Trull A, although they would prove to be unbeatable throughout the course of the season.

Sue Rackley and Liz Deem defeated the Bridgwater ladies 6-4, 6-1 so the men needed to win to win their rubber to secure an overall win.

James Cross and Connor, in what was the first time they'd played together, also had a championship tie-break.

It was very tense with Bridgwater ahead 7-5 but Wellington held their nerve and would ultimately come out victorious with a score of 11-9.

The club will now end the season with a get together and play more tennis, followed by drinks to celebrate an enjoyable season.

There will now be some junior sports camps taking place at the club, alongside an LTA tournament as well. Courts will also be able to be booked by the general public, costing £7.
