WELLINGTON Rugby Club's head coach Bradley Field is calling on his players to improve their fitness.
It follows the first team's poor start to the season in which they have lost their opening three matches in Regional Two South West, the latest being a 21-12 loss at Crediton.
"The first 25 minutes at Crediton was fabulous," he said. "We were all over them. We tackled really well and the backs were on fire.
"But then the momentum shifted. Our discipline was not very good - we played against the wind in the second half and we couldn't handle the pressure.
"It was very disappointing - it was a game which we should have won."
Wellington have a blank Saturday (Sept 27) for the first team and Field said this week: "The boys will train on Tuesday and then have Thursday and Saturday off.
"I want the lads to work on their individual fitness during this time. Too many are going down with cramp and things like that. The lads need to work harder on their fitness."
Field missed the defeat at Crediton with a shoulder injury and says he will be fit for the home game against Penzance and Newlyn in Regional Two South West on Saturday, October 4. The coach, now turned 40, is now playing again at fly half after being out of action for a lengthy spell.
The 2nds are also without a game on Saturday, September 27, but return to action with a home game against Wells in Counties Three Somerset South the following Saturday.
Meanwhile, Wellington Vixens will be back in action on Saturday when they have an attractive friendly against Plymouth Albion at the Athletic Ground, with a 1.30p.m. kick off.
Wiveliscombe’s first and second teams are also without matches this weekend.
