THE ever popular Wellington Cricket Club indoor youth nets got underway last Friday, with the largest ever turnout, as nearly 80 kids filled Court Fields Sports Hall for three hours of coaching.

Session One, which was headed up by club treasurer Marc Holloway, saw children from reception to year 4 have an introduction to cricket through cricket based games.

Session Two (pictured), which had children generally in years 5 and 6, and included several players from last years U11 title winning squad, were put through their paces by formal Wellington player and level 4 coach Russell Jones, who has been associated with this venture for many years.

Russell then took the final session with the club’s U13 and U15 squads in attendance.

Tony Hutchings, youth secretary at Wellington Cricket Club, said: “These sessions just go from strength to strength, with year on year an increase in numbers of those attending. We have so many people to thank, from the town council, who provided the grant to pay to hire the facilities, senior youth players, who gave up their own time to help with the younger players, those behind the scenes who help with admin, and all the paperwork that is needed to run this venture.

“Almost 80 kids is astounding, and with another nine weeks to go, the future for cricket in the town couldn’t look healthier, as regular first teamers, Arron Campbell, Jack Holloway, Macca Campbell, Ben Evett and Will Derrick, all started their cricket at these sessions many moons ago”.
