VILLAGERS in Milverton will have an opportunity to climb their parish church tower as part of a fund-raising activity day during the May bank holiday weekend.

St Michael’s Church is organising a community day on Saturday, May 2, ahead of the village’s spring fair in the recreation ground on the bank holiday Monday.

Activities include a scavenger hunt, bell ringing demonstrations, and a Wivey Community Choir afternoon sing-song.

There will also be opportunities throughout the day to climb the 100 steps to the top of the church tower for stunning views of the surrounding landscape.

On the way back down the tower, visitors can stop off in the ringing chamber for a demonstration by the church’s bellringers and an opportunity to ring one of the bells.

Wiveliscombe-based youth service In The Mix will also be attending to highlight the programme of activities it has lined up for young people in the coming summer.

Refreshments will be provided by the village’s Roxy's Cakes and Bakes.

St Michael’s will also be showcasing some of its previous community projects and what the parochial church council has planned for later this year.

A spokesperson said “We are excited to be hosting a special community day at the church, with a range of fun activities for all ages to enjoy.

“It is a great opportunity to come together as a community, explore the church, and take part in something a little different.

“All donations will go directly toward helping us keep the church open and thriving as a welcoming community space for everybody.

“Your support truly makes a difference in preserving this important place for future generations.”

The spokesperson said the tower climb, which needed to be booked online, involved a narrow stairway, so suitable footwear was requited, while for safety reasons children had to be older than eight years.
