A COMPREHENSIVE 231-page report about protecting Wellington’s environmental surroundings now and in the future was given the thumbs-up by councillors in the space of just a few minutes.
Members of Wellington Town Council’s environment committee met on September 17 where open spaces manager Darren Hill put forward a “nature recovery plan.”
Biodiversity is the term used to describe the variety of life on the planet including animals, plants and fungi as well as recognisable wildlife such as birds, mammals and insects.
The habitats are the places they live and how they interact with their surroundings as part of the eco-system.
The report reads: “Wellington Town Council recognises the crucial role biodiversity plays in sustaining healthy eco-systems, supporting the wellbeing of residents and contributing to the fight against climate change.
“This policy outlines the council’s commitment to protecting, enhancing and promoting biodiversity across the town.”
Cllr Sean Pringle-Kosikowsky said: “We are lucky to live in a community which has so many groups who want to be involved and support the town.”
The committee supported the plan and recommended it should go to full council to get the final seal of approval.
Somerset Council has also invited residents, landowners, community groups and businesses to have their say on its local nature recovery strategy, a statutory plan to protect and restore wildlife and habitats.
The strategy will help to guide action and investment in areas where nature recovery is most needed. It will also support land managers, developers, planners, environmental groups, and residents in identifying opportunities for nature recovery.
Somerset Council’s environment spokesman, Cllr Graham Oakes, said: “This strategy is about working together to make sure that our wildlife, green spaces, and natural landscapes can thrive for future generations.”
Its county-wide consultation is open until October 31 and more details are available on Somerset Council’s website at www.somerset.gov.uk
