THE sale of the post office and convenience store at Rockwell Green is ’still going through’. The store was first put on the market about 18 months ago by the owners Haran and Meera Niranjan, originally from Sri Lanka, who are retiring after more than 20 years running the service.

Wellington has not had its own post office since the closure of the One Shop in the town’s High Street nearly four years ago.

Efforts to establish a new town centre location have come to nothing despite interest from several sources.

One of the problems in setting up a new post office in Wellington is that no-one seems to be able to find a way to make it pay.

And judging by the lengthy sale of the store in Rockwell, it can be a long, drawn-out process.

So it seems the Rockwell Green shop will continue to trade as normal, but it may be a long time before a post office opens again in Wellington.

Don’t forget to keep those long-johns on if you have to queue outside at Rockwell!

Town is getting busier but house prices keep going up

WELLINGTON is becoming a much busier place these days. There appears to be more traffic in town and there seems to be many more shoppers.

I guess the reason is the number of new homes which have been built in the last seven or eight years. Cades, Longforth and Monument View are sizeable new housing estates while there have been a number of smaller building developments - ie behind Lloyds Bank, Blackdown Meadow at Chelston, etc.

Having lived in Wellington virtually all my life, I’ve never known so many houses being built. And they keep selling, although there may have been a slowdown in the last couple of months. However, semis and terrace houses do not seem affected. Did I see a three-bedroom property in Springfield had been sold for nearly £300,000 recently.

There are also many new four-bedroom properties for sale, so there is a wide choice locally. It would be unthinkable a few years ago to be paying almost half a million pounds for a four-bedroom property. I pity the first-time buyer!
