POLICE are appealing for witnesses and information from the public after incidents of criminal damage and anti-social behaviour in Wellington.
Christmas decorations have been uprooted and torn from gardens and walls at several homes in the town.
One couple targeted were Simon Waygood, a part-time fireman before being injured, and his wife Teresa, who has terminal cancer.
Vandals struck at their bungalow home in Barn Meads Road only a day after they had decorated the outside of their home.
The following night vandals uprooted goalposts at Wellesley Park School and caused other damage – all under the cover of darkness.
And they threw eggs and stones at houses in Elworthy Drive where decorations were also trashed. Churchfields has also been targeted.
The first incidents were reported on Monday, December 5, and this was followed by more anti-social behaviour the following night.
In a statement, police say four young white males were seen running away. They were wearing dark clothes and hooded tops.
The police added: “Do you have any information about these incidents? If so, please Police hunt for yobs in hoodies call PCSO Steve Hill on the 101 number quoting URN 5216271210. You can also email PCSO Hill via the website www.avonandsomerset.police.uk
“Alternatively you can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555111. They never ask your name or trace your call.”
Public reaction has been mixed. Some feel anger at such behaviour and that the culprits, if caught, will avoid any real punishment.
WWN reporter Barry Knott, who interviewed Simon and Teresa Waygood on the morning when their garden was attacked, said: “I wonder if the culprits are now aware about how upsetting this has been, particularly for Simon and Teresa. They love Christmas and want it to be extra special this year for obvious reasons.”
