A town centre shop has closed suddenly.

The Cats Protection charity shop in South Street has taken the decision to close permanently.

The Cats protection charity rehouses more than 30,000 cats a year as part of their mission to give 'Every cat has their best possible life.'

The store ran a brief 'everything must go sale' before closing down for good - after choosing not to renew their lease which is approaching expiry.

In a statement a spokesperson for the charity said: "Cats Protection’s Wellington shop has now closed. The lease is due to expire and a decision was made not to renew it. We would like to take this opportunity to thank volunteers and customers for their valued support over the years.

"Our nearby Taunton shop has recently reopened for business, selling a wide range of quality second-hand goods and cat-themed gifts, raising money for cats and kittens in need."

The news comes after a new animal charity shop, the Ferne Animal Sanctuary, opened in Fore Street this week, occupying the former Children's Hospice shop.
