TRAFFIC on the M5 motorway near Wellington was stopped on Thursday afternoon (June 18) when a person was believed to have threatened to jump from a bridge.

Vehicles were stationary on the northbound carriageway between junction 26 for Wellington and Taunton’s junction 25.

The incident was thought to have taken place on the bridge over the motorway at Shoreditch, near Taunton Racecourse.

An Avon and Somerset Police spokesperson said: “A stretch of the M5 was closed in both directions between junctions 25 to 24 due to concern for the safety of an individual, which was reported to us at around 3.10 pm today.

“The incident was safely concluded at around 4.20 pm, and the motorway has since reopened.”

A Wellington fire crew was mobilised by Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue to attend the incident and provide support to police officers who were present.
