Volunteers are needed for a pilot project to restore and maintain largely untended areas of Wellington Cemetery.

The cemetery has a number of graves of those who helped to make Wellington what it is, such as the Fox family and those of many others who contributed to the local community and who are now without relatives to tend their final place of rest.

Rachel Edgecombe, from Wellington Graveyard Gardeners, said: “This is a chance for volunteers to pick a grave they wish to tend, learn about the person that passed, and carry on their memory through devoting some love and attention to gardening their grave.

“What we request of our volunteers is a little time and the desire to bring someone’s memory back to life.

“We will, of course, respectfully avoid any graves that are clearly tended or of recent time.

“If volunteering isn’t a possibility we welcome any old gardening tools, plants and seeds or space to grow plants. We are hosting an initial meeting in Odette’s tea room on August 10 at 10am if you would like further details or visit the group Facebook page – https://www.facebook.com/groups/481311125953872/Rachel
