RUMOURS that one of Wellington’s largest employers was relocating to a new site in town have been quashed - for the time being.

However, Relyon Beds Ltd accepted it no longer needed all of its current space and was looking at all options for the future, but would be staying put for at least two years.

The company, which employs about 160 people, has been making mattresses in the town for nearly 170 years.

It was believed to want to move from Station Mills to the Lowmoor Business Park, Tonedale.

But, managing director Alan Chapman dismissed the speculation surrounding a potential relocation as incorrect.

Mr Chapman said: “As a result of the business restructuring since 2020, it is clear our existing site at Station Mills is larger than our operational requirements.

“Therefore, we have, and will be considering, all long-term options to ensure we have a site that is more suitable for our requirements.

“These include potential planning opportunities as well as changes to our existing site facilities.

“These considerations will take time.

“There are no immediate plans for us to relocate, and we do not expect to do so for at least two years.

“We can also confirm that we have no intention of moving to the Lowmoor site currently occupied by KDC/One Swallowfield.

“Should any decisions be made in the future, our employees and representatives will be informed in the first instance, before any wider public announcement.”

The KDC/One Swallowfield premises will become vacant when the cosmetics and aerosols firm closes and transfers its business to Scotland by the end of January.

Relyon was bought out of administration in 2020 by Michco 2001 Ltd, formed by ex-Relyon Group chief executive Ian Topping and private investors.

Its most recent annual accounts to September 30, 2025, showed a profit of £151,225, down on the previous year’s £427,413.
