FIRE crews from Wellington were called in the early hours of Thursday (August 24) to help tackle an arson attack on the park and ride bus site in Silk Mills, Taunton.

Seven Somerset Council vehicles were set on fire and completely destroyed in a storage yard on the site.

The Wellington fire teams supported two crews from Taunton Fire Station who were mobilised after Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue (DSFR) received several calls from people who saw the flames shortly after 1 am.

A DSFR spokesperson said: “Fire control received several calls to reports of a fire in a van storage yard.

“Crews used some hydraulic cutting equipment and small tools to gain entry to the storage yard.

“They then used four breathing apparatus, one hose reel jet, one cafs jet to extinguish the fire.

“There was a total of seven commercial vehicles 100 per cent damaged by the fire, which was believed to be deliberate.”

It was not believed anybody was injured in the incident, and there was no damage to any of the First Bus park and ride buses.

A TravelSomerset spokesperson said: “All buses are running normally following a suspected arson attack in Silk Mills Park and Ride site.

“Several council vehicles were destroyed, there were no injuries.

“We are working with Avon and Somerset Police and Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service.”
