A CAR in a lay-by off the A38 near Wellington was destroyed by fire on Sunday evening (August 2).

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue (DSFR) received a 999 call a few minutes before 6 pm and mobilised a fire crew from Wellington to the scene half a mile from the Beambridge Inn.

The firefighters found the dark colour Range Rover ‘well alight’ and set to with breathing apparatus and a hose reel jet to tackle the blaze,

A thermal imaging camera was then used to check for any hotspots.

The whole car suffered damage in the fire, with the engine compartment left as a twisted metal wreck.

A DSFR spokesperson said the cause was considered to be accidental.
