NEW public toilets in Wellington at the centre of a war of words between the town council and the manufacturer were finally opened on Monday (October 12).
The £220,000 modular toilet block was delivered on site in Longforth Road on July 26 but remained closed after the council said more than 80 faults were discovered.
The council then blamed manufacturer Danfo UK Ltd for not putting right the faults, which meant the building had to remain closed and portable toilets were hired for the town carnival at the end of September.
But Danfo said the council may not have been aware of the ‘full facts’.
Now, a ‘satisfactory inspection’ has been carried out and the toilets were quietly opened for use early on Monday morning.
There are two unisex cubicles, one with a baby changing facility, which will be open between 7.30 am and 7.30 pm daily.
The third cubicle is an accessible and baby change facility which will be open between the same times, with out-of-hours access available with a RADAR key.
The new block replaces conveniences which were badly damaged when a car crashed into it shortly before Christmas, 2022.
