THE approaching Storm Austen set to hit the Wellington area on Friday (October 23) has forced a postponement for five months of the town’s much-anticipated Garden of Light event.
A yellow weather warning for strong winds has been issued by the Met Office with gusts expected to reach 55 mph.
The event on Saturday night would have seen Wellington Park host live performances, aerial arts, fire and light illuminations, sound installations, projections, and music.
Different levels of lighting were to used for the event, including ultra violet, to offer the audience the chance to experience the atmosphere, quietness, and subtlety drawn from the beauty of the park.
It was being organised by Fuse Performance and Somerset Outdoor Arts with financial backing from Wellington Town Council.
Last year’s inaugural Garden of Light was a spectacular success with tickets selling out and more than 2,000 people attending during the evening.
People who bought tickets for this year’s event have been contacted by the council to advise it will instead be held on Saturday, March 20, 2027.
All tickets will be honoured on the new date.
A council spokesperson said: “Due to the wet weather forecast and expected strong wind gusts, we have made the difficult decision to postpone Wellington Garden of Light.
“The safety of everybody attending, including our visitors, performers, artists, volunteers, and event team, is our priority.
“Unfortunately, the weather conditions mean we cannot safely deliver the event as planned.
“We are sorry for any disappointment and thank you for your understanding and support.
“We look forward to welcoming you to Wellington Park in March for a magical evening of light, creativity, and community.
“Thank you for your patience, and please share this announcement to help spread the word.
“Ticket holders have been notified directly.”
