FIRE crews responded to reports of a possible gas leak and evacuation at a major factory in Wellington on Wednesday morning (March 13).

KDC/One Swallowfield, which is one of the town’s biggest employers, is understood to have briefly halted production after the hazard was discovered.

Crews from Taunton and Wellington stations arrived at the scene and working with Wales and West Utilities, they discovered “a small gas leak in a false ceiling of a new building.”

A Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “We were called at 9.18am to reports of a possible gas leak and evacuation at a commercial building on Station Road.

“Teams from Wellington and Taunton worked alongside Wales and West Utilities to locate a small gas leak in a false ceiling of a new building. The supply to that building has been isolated and is now in the hands of gas workers to fix before workers will be allowed back on site.”
