The quarter final stages of the singles and pairs competitions at Wellington Bowling Club were played at the weekend.

In the singles event Tony Gibson beat Debbie Lane, Ian Hollingsworth beat Derrick Alford and Nick Channon defeated Christine Willcocks – all quite convincingly. The fourth match between Gerry Mangeolles and Tony Weston was a much tighter affair with Gerry coming through victorious 19-15.

In the pairs competition Debbie and John Lane beat Henry Richbell and Bernard Barnes 11-7 despite a comeback from Henry and Bernard who, at one stage, were 7-0 down and got back to 9-7 on the penultimate end.

In another quarter final Tony Gibson and Chris Williams played Rob and Cheryl Higgs in a much closer match. Tony and Chris were leading 9-8 on the penultimate end only for Rob to perform what Tony and Chris called a ‘ Nick Brett’ manoeuvre when he turned a three down to three up with his final wood. In the third quarter final Gery Mangeolles and Steve Bradnum lost to Alan Avery and Christine Willcocks 9-8.

Meanwhile, Wellington played a mixed triples bowling match away against North Petherton last weekend.

Under Covid-19 guidelines only three rinks were used and Wellington won on all three. Roger Murphy, Tony Gibson and skip Gill Groves won 23-15, while Shirley Samuel, Ed Dilley and skip Jay Merrell had an even bigger win 31 shots to 5.

On the last rink Angie Moore, Brian Wombwell and skip Mike Groves came out winners by 24 shots to 12.
