IT IS with great sadness that Rockwell Green Short Mat Bowls Club has learned of the passing of one of its oldest members Hugh Giles, who has died at the age of 90. Hugh was the founder of the Rockwell Green Short Mat Bowling Club way back in 1999. Not only was he a very good player at the time but he served as chairman for many years.

As the years progressed his playing days were reduced due to ill health but he still took an interest in the club and was keen to keep in touch.

At the start of the club being formed, Hugh obtained a grant from the National Lottery for all the equipment it needed and sought out new members on his own. He eventually got 10 or so interested people, of which only two are still active today within the club.

Over the years the club has grown to a peak of 40 members. Hugh served as chairman and secretary when no one else could or would do the job, and mostly through his efforts he kept the club running.

Today, apart from internal competitons, Rockwell Green Short Mat Bowling Club plays matches throughout the year against other clubs in the area. These are not only competitive matches but they also provide social occasions for members to meet up on a regular basis and make new friends - an important aspect of life for older people.

Hugh also took a keen interest in the village hall, securing a grant from Age Concern. With his wife Janet they were keen whist players and travelled far and wide to play. Sadly, Janet passed away in 2022 and this hit Hugh very hard as they were very much a devoted couple.
