THERE have been some surprises in Wellington Bowling Club’s Weekend Mixed Triples League.
Third placed Skylarks toppled the all powerful Southsiders, fifth placed New Rollers won against fourth placed Allstars and Woodpeckers cemented their second place with a victory over the Ninchers.
The match between Skylarks and Southsiders was a close battle all the way through. At the halfway point the teams were level on 5 shots each. David Harrison, Marguerite Nicholls and Steve Horrill's Southies then picked up a small lead but Monica Carter, June Anderson and Arthur Carter's Skylarks settled to their task. They collected an all important five shots near the end to pinch victory by 10 shots to 7.
The Allstars were unfortunate because they were a player short on the day and when that happens, although they can play with only two bowlers, they lose a third of their total score at the end.
Alan Mark and Debbie Beasley's Allstars were determined to do all they could and by the ninth end they had a slender lead of 8 shots to 6. Maria Mitchell, Diana Dagg and skip David Dagg’s New Rollers got down to some serious bowling and soon caught up.
With three to play the teams were level on 10 shots apiece. The last end saw Allstars collect four shots to finish the game 15 – 12. But because they had to deduct a third of their score, the unfortunate Allstars came second and the winners by 12 shots to 10 were the New Rollers.
Sally Waygood, Trevor Jenkins and skip Sue Channon's Woodpeckers were in fine form against Dorothy Parsons, Matthew Lennox and Martyn Beed's Ninchers.
Despite being one shot down at the beginning, the Woodies piled on the points to gainede a comfortable victory by 17 shots to 4.
