THE Ladies' indoor leagues have begun at Wellington Bowling Club with matches being played on Thursday afternoons and Friday evenings.

There was only one match played in the Thursday Afternoon League. The Doves took on the Swallows and after a very close game Doves came through to win.

In the Friday Australian Pairs League the Rowans enjoyed a good victory over the Oaks and the Hazels won against Elms

The Australian Pairs game is different from the conventional bowls which has been played in the U.K. for many years.

In the Aussie Pairs, bowlers in a team play both Lead and Skip. This is very different because in the conventional game where Leads and Skips remain in their allocated position all through the match.

To begin with the Leads start off with two bowls each and then the Skips play their four bowls. Next the Leads complete their end with their final two bowls.

After this their roles are reversed and the Skips become Leads and the Leads become Skips. This pattern continues throughout the game.

Maggie Milton and Judith Short's Rowans enjoyed their Aussie Pairs game against Debbie Lane and Pauline Wadham's Oaks. Rowans were on top form and pulled away early on to take a 5 – 1 lead and although the Oaks came back at them it was too late and the Rowans won comfortably 11 – 3.

Debbie Beasley and Diana Dagg's Elms started well taking a 2 – 0 lead early on but Shirley Samuels and Wendy Scott's Hazels overtook and went on to win 12 - 4.

In the only Thursday afternoon game played, Janet Lovell and Angie Moore's Swallows played Judith Short and June Anderson's Doves in a very closely fought match in which the Doves were the victors 10 – 8.
