WELLINGTON Bowling Club celebrated a good win against Minehead in the second round of the Wedmore Plate, their men winning on three out of four games on their home green.

It was no easy task, however, against four very strong sides from Minehead.

On the first rink, Barry Cutler, Bill Warnett, Jay Merrell and Tony Gibson were level pegging on five shots each at the halfway point but the Minehead side pulled away in the second half and despite the Wellington four's best efforts Minehead went on to win it 16 – 9.

Mike Copping, Pete Nichols, Nick Channon and Mike Groves were leading 7 – 5 at the halfway point but found themselves 12 – 10 down after 13 ends with only four to play. However some determined bowling saw the Wellingtonians squeeze past to pinch it on the line 15 – 14.

Peter White, Mark Bond, John Lane and Graham Brown had a fair old battle on their hands but they led by 12 shots to 3 after seven ends and things were looking good. However the Minehead side pulled back and were just two behind on 17 – 15 with three to play.

It was no easy task but the Wellington four settled to their game and picked up seven shots in the last three ends to win it 24 – 16.

On the last rink, Peter Barlow, Roger Murphy, Darren Sparks and Paul Kelly started well. They were 11 shots up before the Minehead side got started, but by the 14th end Minehead were only two behind.

Despite their opponents' comeback, Paul Kelly's side pulled ahead in the last ends to win 23 - 16 and celebrate Wellington's overall victory by 72 shots to 64.

Wellington will now go through to play North Petherton in the Wedmore Plate quarter finals.
