WELLINGTON Bowling Club Ladies are through to the quarter-finals of the Fear Cup - the Somerset inter-club competition.

They turned on the style to beat three teams of ladies from Bridgwater Bowling Club in the second round of the competition.

They won on all three rinks to book their place in the last eight.

It was a very warm evening so cold drinks were available for the players during the match. The three games were played over 18 ends.

On the first rink, Wendy Scott, Jane Hayes, Shirley Samuel and Chrissie Willcocks had a battle on their hands. They were up against strong opponents and at the halfway point Wellington were 11 – 5 down and things were not looking good.

However, they fought back and drew level on 11 shots each in the 12th end. The last six ends were really tight between two very strong teams but Chrissie's Wellington side pulled ahead to win by three shots 17 – 14.

Pauline Wadham, June Anderson, Marguerite Nichols and Lynda Manning were on top form. The unfortunate Bridgwater side could not get going and after six ends were 13 – 0 down. The visiting ladies began to pick up shots after that but they were always chasing the game and Wellington won it comfortably 26 – 6.

Lisa Dart, Janet Lovell, Angie Moore and Gill Groves did not get off to a good start. They were 7 – 1 down after six ends but they settled to their work and by the 13th they were only one behind at 9 – 8. The last ends were very close but the Wellington ladies managed to pinch it on the line 12 – 11.

Wellington's Ladies celebrated an overall 55 – 31 victory and are now looking forward to playing in the next round of the competition hoping to go even further.
