WELLINGTON 2nd XI moved up to second in Division Two of the Somerset Cricket League after beating Burnham on Sea away by six wickets.

Star of Wellington’s victory was Ben Evett who came in with the visitors struggling at 12-3 and was still there at the close on 77 not out - a knock which included 13 fours. He shared in a fourth-wicket stand of 98 with Aks Latifi who made 47.

Burnham, who won the toss and decided to bat first, were bowled out for 146 in 38.2 overs with Connor Lefrere being their top scorer with 42.

Alex Derbidge took 3-19 in eight overs and Neil Hendy 3-37 while Tom Hopkins, Andy Hurry, Rob Moysey and Wil Parkman all picked up a wicket as Wellington’s bowling attack kept Burnham pinned down.

In response, Wellington made a poor start, losing Hendy, Paul Short and Oli Hutchings before Latifi and Evett came to the rescue as the visitors reached their target in 26 overs. Ollie Farnham took 2-18, Peter Harris 1-18 and Sam Goodhew 1-28.

It was Burnham’s first defeat of the season and they slipped from being top to third, with West Monkton being the new leaders.

Monkton were impressive nine-wicket winners over Staplegrove who were bowled out for 173 in 39.3 overs. James Leck (80 not out) and Will Ostler (75 not out) were their match-winners after they had lost a wicket for only seven runs.

Broadway & Horton moved up to fourth in the table after they gained a 29-run away win over Huntspill and District who were bowled out for 141 while chasing a target of 170 (all out).

Wellington 2nd XI will be back at the Playing Field on Saturday, May 31, when they play Yeovil 2nd XI who are lying second from bottom.
