THERE was no play possible between Taunton and Wellington last Saturday in this WEPL Somerset Division match as the expected rain arrived at around the appointed start time of noon, writes David Derrick.
Both teams were duty bound to wait for a spell before the game was called off in line with WEPL's protocols and eventually this was the case. Both sides took six points to leave Wellington in fifth place in the early season table while Taunton occupy eighth spot after three rounds of ‘matches.’
Play was possible in other games in the division with Yeovil gaining a 92-run victory over Bridgwater 2nd XI to open up a two-point lead at the top of the table.
William Chesterman was one of the stars of Yeovil’s success, scoring 142 not out with 24 fours, in a score of 291-5 in 41 overs, while Max Dicker hit 68 and Siby Chacko 38. Scott Clapp snapped up 3-43.
Bridgwater were 100-9 after 20 overs with Dan Ewens taking 5-12 in four tremendous overs, while Dicker took 2-15. Harminder Singh (27) and Ben Coombes (22) were the only batters to make runs on a disappointing day for Bridgwater.
Ilminster are second in the table after they gained a five-wicket win over Temple Cloud who scored 140 in 39 overs with C Ward being their leading batter with 42 not out while L James took 3-29 and T Brock 2-27. Opener P Panchal steered the South Somerset side to victory with an unbeaten 69 while T Sainsbury and C Vickery both made 21. M Hassan took 3-12.
