WELLINGTON 0

TAVISTOCK 1

TAVISTOCK snatched victory with a goal in the 88th minute of this game in the Premier Division of the Toolstation League under lights on Wednesday night.

It ended a rearguard action by Wellington with goalkeeper Tom Welch bringing off a string of fine saves.

But he could do nothing about the winning goal as a cross was deflected and Jack Crago headed home for the three points.

In a boxing match, Tavistock would have won on points but there were times when Wellington could have scored in a high-tempo game which was a fine advert for Toolstation League football.

Welch made four top-draw saves in the first half to keep his goal intact while scoring chances fell to Wellington skipper Glen Wright and Ollie Holman.

The best chance of the game so far fell to Crago in the 48th minute but he put his shot over the crossbar. Holman was presented with a chance in the 51st minute but shot straight at the goalkeeper.

Still Wellington rode their luck with Welch, seemingly, unbeatable. There were still chances at the other end and second-half substitute George Sinnott and Holman missed the target.

Crago, too, fluffed his lines by miskicking in front of goal in the 75th minute before finally grabbing the all-important winner – much to the Devon side’s delight.

The three points enabled Tavistock to step up into second spot, while Wellington remain in 17th place, having played more games than most teams around them.

Despite defeat, Wellington are looking much more competitive and in Welch have one of the best goalkeepers in the division. However, Wellington boss Tim Legg knows much work is still to be done.

Wellington: Tom Welch, Josh Champion, Jack Lewis, Tom Davies, Jason Quick, Miles Quick, Scott Merritt, Glen Wright (capt), Jesse Howe, Mason Raymond, Ollie Holman. Substitutes: George Sinnott (used), Tim Legg, Danny Williams, Josh Baker (not used).
