DESPITE an improvement on the previous weekend’s display, Wellington were beaten 6-0 away by Newquay in the Premier Division of the Jewson Western League in their latest match.

The Tangerines had keeper Luke Vernon to thank for keeping the scores level during the opening stages as their player of the match produced a series of fine saves. But Wellington were also posing a threat and produced a flowing move after 25 minutes which ended with young winger Isaac Baker unleashing a stinging shot which was parried by the home keeper.

Three minutes later, however, Newquay made the breakthrough as Louis Price broke clear before shooting home to put his side ahead. Wellington looked set to go into the interval only one goal behind but the hosts struck again in stoppage time, Tim Nixon cutting inside before firing home .

The Tangerines made a bright start to the second half and Lewis Oaten went close six minutes after the restart when his looping header dropped just over the bar.

Newquay then struck the woodwork before Vernon produced another excellent save, this time using his legs to keep out the home side. But the Wellington keeper was finally beaten for a third time after 63 minutes when Newquay were awarded a penalty and Jack Bray-Evans fired home the spot-kick.

The hosts added a fourth ten minutes later as a cross was volleyed home by Price for his second goal of the afternoon.

Wellington’s difficult afternoon continued two minutes later when a cross from the right was turned into their own net and Newquay completed the scoring two minutes from time, Ben Shaw scoring from eight yards.
