AFTER a heavy defeat in their first game to top of the table Forton Rangers, Wellington United have gone on to secure their first win of the season in Division Three of the Under 14 section in the Taunton Youth Football League - and in dramatic style.

Starting strong at home the boys took on Minehead Eagles in a very evenly contested match, with end to end football at its finest until Minehead conceded a penalty due to a handball in the box. The spot kick was nicely taken by Harry N but, unfortunately, saved by the visitors’ sharp goalkeeper which meant the home side still had a fight on their hands to break the deadlock.

More disappointment followed for Wellington as a lob, which the Welly keeper thought was going over, the visitors went ahead against the run of play.

The game continued with end to end play with Minehead going in at the interval 1-0 up.

It was much the same at the start of the second half with Wellington pressing and testing the visitors’ goalie on numerous occasions.

Minehead continued to hang on to their lead until the 62nd minute when Wellington drew level with a superb strike from Zach W making its way past the very talented opposition keeper before scoring.

Wellington came under pressure again from the visitors but the Welly boys held fast.

The game entered it final stages with the referee calling 30 secondss remaining. The home team broke through and the ball found its way to the Welly winger Leo U who superbly slotted away a last-gasp winner for a dramatic end to an exciting game.

It was well done to both goal scorers and to player of the match Zach W; also the boys would like to thank “The Gutter Doctor” who are the team’s kit sponsor.
