WELLINGTON are out of the Western Counties Floodlit Youth Football League’s Roger Stone Memorial Cup after losing 4-1 away to Sherborne Town who have yet to lose a match this season.
Both sides play in South Division of the league and Wellington put up a spirited display against a very useful Sherborne side.
Wellington’s young, depleted squad started well, forcing an early corner which was delivered by Harvey and nearly turned home by Joshua.
It didn’t take too long for Sherborne to open the scoring when a cross caused a mix-up at the back post and the ball ended up going straight in.
They then doubled their lead when a flick-on found the striker behind the defence.
Wellington regrouped and started to get a hold on the game and were rewarded in the 28th minute when a Zac corner was met by the rising Freddie, whose header found the far corner of the net.
Wellington were dealt a blow right on the half-time whistle when a Sherborne corner dropped into the six-yard box and was scrambled home.
In the second half, Wellington were more composed and brighter, with a Joshua volley going close while they also hit the post from a corner.
Unfortunately, for all of Wellington’s hard work, Sherborne put the final nail in the coffin when another mix-up from a corner saw the ball drop into the far corner to make it 4-1 with no way back for the visitors after this goal.
Player of the match was captain for the evening Ollie H, who led the team well and was ever-present at the base of midfield.
He was presented with the award by kit man Adrian Ridgeway after the match.
