WELLINGTON Reserves’ East Devon Senior Cup game against the University of Exeter Reserves at the Carly Press Ground was abandoned at half-time on Saturday, October 24, because of a waterlogged pitch.
The tie was halted at half time by the referee with the students 2-1 ahead.
The game had kicked off in torrential rain and a fierce wind although, to their credit, both sides tried their best to produce some decent football in the atrocious conditions. The visitors went close after only six minutes when a shot flew just wide of the post.
Wellington then had two chances in quick succession after 17 minutes. Alfie Barratt saw his shot saved and, when Wes Poulsom followed up, his effort was deflected over the bar.
However, the young visitors took the lead after 23 minutes when a run into the box ended with the final pass being side-footed past keeper Charlie Hawkings.
They doubled their advantage six minutes later as another run into the area ended with a neat finish past Hawkings.
Wellington hit back in the 32nd minute when Ollie Ackland played the ball into the box and Barratt dived in among a group of players to head inside the post.
The home side nearly drew level just a minute later when Oli Nott fired a free kick narrowly over the university bar.
That was the end of the action as, with conditions worsening, the referee decided to abandon the tie at the break, and it will now have to be replayed.
*Both Wellington and the University of Exeter Reserves play in the Premier Division of the Stitch2Print Devon and Exeter Football League.
The Reserves are lying in third spot, three points behind leaders Sidmouth Town Reserves with a game in hand, while the students are down in 11th place but have played only three games.
