WELLINGTON Wildcats gained their second win of the season when they beat Isle of Wedmore 4-2 away in the Under 16 section of the Somerset Girls Football League, writes Georgia Purdy.

Wildcats settled into their work early and found Flo G on the left in fine form working with Emilia. On the 10 minute mark Emilia was in the box to open the scoring. Wildcats then went through a tough period suffering a couple of injuries, and rejigging players into different positions. On the 30 minute mark, with their only shot of the half, Wedmore equalised and the game was level at the interval.

Immy was player of the match for her all round display showing exceptional ability and determination, but the teamwork and atmosphere throughout by all players was great to see, supported by the ever faithful parents and families.

Playing a back 3 in the second half and pressing higher up the pitch saw the Wildcats play some terrific passing football. The Wedmore centre back pairing were very tough and physical so chances were initially not easy to come by, but enjoying the midfield dominance, Frankie, Isla, Lacey and Hallie in the middle supported by the energetic Flo G and Immy playing right ring, was a particular force using her powerful accurate passing and setup a potential assist of the season allowing Emilia to regain the lead.

Willow suffered a twisted ankle on a last ditch tackle and was replaced by Amelia W who won several 50/50s with composure. Defender Darcey nearly scored from 30 yards and shortly after Lily F scored her first goal hooking the ball over the keeper from 20 yards.

Wedmore won a penalty which was dispatched. But with captain Jess rock solid as ever, supported by another commanding display by Isla, holding a strong line, and with Sophie’s goalkicks going over half way, pressure was released and another counter ended with a fine pass seeing Lily run clear from half way to seal a fine victory.

Meanwhile, with just a bare 11 away to, Winscombe, Wildcats 15s were absolutely fantastic despite losing 6-0.

Winscombe took an early after 10 minutes, then shortly after doubled it with a lucky shin looping kick over keeper Faith.

As the half progressed Winscombe scored a couple more. Wellington did create a fair few chances with Cheyenne and Alisha coming close.

The second half started brightly with Wildcats not conceding and playing their hearts out. Anya and Maisie covered every blade of grass on the pitch, On the counter Winscombe found a couple more goals to extend their lead, and Winscombe then scored 2 more quick goals on the break. POTM was Maisie W.

*The Wildcats U13s took on Huish Tigers in a friendly at Dobree Park and won 2-1.

The Wildcats took the lead when a Huish defender unfortunately put the ball into her own net. The girls continued to work hard and create chances, with Lola Richards eventually getting her reward with neat finish to make it 2-0.

With the Tigers short on numbers, a few of the Wildcats kindly stepped in to play for Huish and did a fantastic job of supporting them. Sara M even managed to get on the scoresheet for Huish, giving the Tigers a deserved goal for their efforts.

Players of the Match, Nia W and Stevie W.
