WELLINGTON Lions U8s reached the semi-finals of the Kingsley Cup in the Bideford Football Tournament where they went out to the eventual winners Broadclyst.

With ten strong North Devon teams in the group stage and only two teams going out, there was plenty to be excited about.

However, Lions are notorious for starting tournaments slowly and this wasn’t any different. With two defeats in their opening two games and sitting tenth in the group stages, it was looking like a mountain to climb if they had any chance of qualifying.

But this is a very strong Lions team and they enjoy a challenge. Lions went on to win their following four games and finished the group stage with a draw against Ilfracombe to complete the group stage in the top five. In the quarter-finals Lions were up against Bideford, who beat them 2-0 early in their second fixture. This was a hard fought 0-0 draw that led to Lions roaring to victory on penalties and into the semi finals. In the semi finals, Lions played Broadclyst, who they lost to in their opening game. Unfortunately, this led to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of this very well drilled team and eventual tournament winners. Lions played some excellent football in their ninth match of a tough day, hitting the crossbar and the side netting but Broadclyst just offered that extra bit of quality in front of goal and stole the win with two well taken goals. However, Lions could be proud of their achievement, attitude, effort and success in flying the flag for Somerset.

Their scorers were: Harry, Jack, Greyson, Jaxon (2 each), Finchy; Pens Greyson, Jack, Harry. Clean sheets Freddie 4; countless runs and tackles in defence Momu and Elijah. Lions would like to thank their sponsors A House of Cake and SB Bakes for their support this season.
