WELLINGTON Wanderers got their competitive campaign off to the perfect start with an impressive 3-0 victory over Ashcott in Division One of the Under 12 section in the Taunton & District Youth League at Court Fields.

Hosting their first ever competitive fixture, the young Tangerines showed from the opening whistle exactly what they were about. Wellington flew out of the blocks, competing strongly for every ball and reacting particularly well to second balls. Their work rate and desire to win possession set the tone for a thoroughly deserved victory.

The pressure soon began to tell, with Wellington playing some excellent football and creating opportunities through a combination of quick passing, intelligent movement and aggressive pressing. By half-time, the Tangerines had established a commanding 3-0 lead, with Harry G scoring twice and Rowan G adding another. All three goals were well taken, reflecting the quality and composure Wellington showed in the final third.

The second half continued in much the same fashion, with Wellington creating further chances while remaining disciplined and solid defensively. Although the scoreline remained unchanged, there was plenty to admire, with the team continuing to move the ball around well at times and showing a maturity beyond their years.

In defence, Louis M, Kohen W, Fraser M. Tom K and Jack P all delivered excellent performances, helping ensure Ashcott were unable to find a way back into the contest. The clean sheet was just reward for a committed and organised defensive display.

While the passing and footballing ability were clear to see, the real key to the victory was the intensity, attitude and togetherness shown throughout the game.

A huge thank you to all the parents who helped pack away the equipment after the game — your support is hugely appreciated.

And finally, a big thank you to fantastic shirt sponsor, Roadchef, for their continued support of the young Tangerines.
