BRIAN Edmond of Dunkeswell completed a remarkable hat-trick of Caravan Chaos victories with his latest success at the latest meeting at Smeatharpe Stadium.

Having won the corresponding caravan races on Easter Monday and Spring Bank Holiday Monday, Edmond made it three from three, and his triple glory was made all the more astonishing as he used the same car on each occasion, to tow a caravan to the chequered flag.

The car, a Toyota Yaris, was previously his late mother Pat’s pride and joy, but it has turned into a most unlikely race winning machine.

The latest Caravan Chaos race began with six entrants, as Aaron Lloyd of Looe and teenager Oscar Berry of Dunkeswell led the grid on the warm-up lap. As soon as the green flag appeared, the mayhem began, with Liam Shipway of Taunton coming under fire from Mark Powell of Torquay. Shipway’s caravan was decimated, and Powell duly lost his caravan on the back straight, as it became detached from his car.

On the next lap, Lloyd obliterated the discarded caravan of Powell, much to the approval of the packed crowd.

Race leader Berry then went on his own wrecking spree, and as he skilfully swung his caravan towards the remnants of Powell’s caravan, it created another explosion of carnage. However, Berry was left with his visibility impaired, as debris became lodged across the mesh screen of his car. As Berry came to a halt, Edmond replaced fellow Dunkeswell driver Shane Kennard as the race leader.

The pits bend crowd were then further entertained when Shipway charged at Kennard, and mounted the trailing remains of the Kennard caravan which had already collapsed off the chassis. Shipway tried the same move again in the west bend, and almost tipped his car on to its side.

Kennard ground to a halt, and Shipway blasted into Lloyd, leaving Edmond to comfortably tick off the remaining laps and clinch another Caravan Chaos victory.

Earlier in the afternoon, Carl Boswell of Shipston-On -Stour had taken top honours in the Saloon Stock Cars. Boswell had made a late start to the season, missing the first three months of competition. However, his feature final win at Smeatharpe will have helped make up for lost time, and it also landed him the splendid Club 21 Trophy.

Thirteen year old Mason Sealy of Bishops Lydeard successfully retained the Devon Championship for Ministox. Sealy has been dominant in the junior class (drivers can only race from 11 years of age and have to stop at 16). Earlier in the month, Sealy won the Cornish Championship at St Day near Redruth, ahead of securing the Devon title for a second successive season.

Teenager Alfie Tomkins of Roche, Cornwall swept to two wins in the Bangers. Tomkins, who was previously the National Champion in Ministox, is in his first year of racing in an adult class. He has been leading the Points Championship for much of the season, but suffered a lot of damage when he last raced two weeks ago. Tomkins prepared a new car for his latest outing, and won both the feature final and the Allcomers races.

The next race action at Smeatharpe will be on Saturday 13 September, with a 4:00pm start time for the annual More Sparks fixture for Bangers. More than 130 drivers have applied to race in the event.
