WELLINGTON will be chasing the season’s double over Burnham on Sea when the sides play in Western Counties West at the Athletic Ground on Saturday (2.30).
Wellington triumphed 14-10 when they played at Burnham in September – one of only five league victories this season.
Although still second from bottom in the table, Wellington have won their last three home games – against Tiverton, St Austell and Wiveliscombe (non-league).
They should be capable of extending this run against a team who are above them in the table but have won less games, particularly as Wellington put up a spirited display before losing 19-13 away to title-chasing Cullompton over the weekend.
“We gave Cullompton too much respect and did not start playing ourselves until the second half,” said Wellington caretaker coach Allyn Chetland.
“If the game had gone on for another ten minutes we would have won. I think everyone thought that.”
The Wellington club are expected to hold a meeting later this month to discuss the coach’s position. “Obviously I would like very much to be involved but ultimately it is up to the club to decide,” said Chetland..
“Team spirit within the club is very good and we are getting good numbers at training, with some former players returning.”
Fortunately, the three teams around Wellington – Bude, Crediton and Burnham – all lost which makes Saturday’s forthcoming match that more important. There is a significant gap between the four bottom teams and the next placed side Tiverton.
Wiveliscombe, who lost to second-placed Weston 2nd XV in Somerset Premier after having a player sent off early on, face another daunting game on Saturday when they play away to Winscombe who have won all 14 of their matches this season and are championship favourites.
Wellington 2nd XV, who gained a very good 34-10 home win over Old Sulians in Somerset One on Saturday, are away to fifth-placed Clevedon while Wiveliscombe 2nd XV are away to their Winscombe counterparts in Somerset Two South.
