WELLINGTON’S veteran scrum-half Tim Jenkinson is training with a view to playing first team rugby this season.

Jenkinson, now 41 and a former skipper, has been on the point of retiring for the past couple of seasons. But coach Allyn Chetland said: “Tim hasn’t played at South West One level and he wants to give it a go. He is in serious training but knows his body can only take so much.”

Wellington won promotion after finishing as champions of Western Counties West last season and will be playing at their highest ever level.

“Individuals have been doing their own training and we’re awaiting guidelines from the RFU when the season is likely to start,” added Chetland. “There are three possible starts – normal, October or November, January. At the moment we are Level B but we have to reach Level F.

“Covid-19 has caused all sorts of problems, not only for rugby but for other sports. Rugby is a full-on sport with much contact.”

Meanwhile, Wellington have put out a feelers for possible new players and have high hopes of a former player rejoining the club.

n Wiveliscombe’s new head coach Nick Clark is expected to meet the players for the first time when they report back for pre-season training on Tuesday, July 7.

The 39-year-old former hooker has played at the top level, including two spells with Exeter Chiefs. He has also played for Bristol, Bath and French club Oyonnax. The Wiveliscombe club are now looking for an assistant for Clark and anyone interested should contact director of rugby Jake Sharland on 07889 206694.

Wiveliscombe’s annual meeting is set for Friday, July 24.
