NO decision on whether Matt Parsons stays as player-coach of Wellington Rugby Club will be made until the middle of this month.
Club chairman Phil Braddick said last night: “We’re currently in negotiations with Matt. It will be up to the management committee to make the decision and any announcement.”
Looking back on the first team’s season, he added: “We came good in the end. We always seem to start slowly – we don’t like the wet. We need some older heads. We have some young players and I’m convinced we’re going to have a good season next winter.”
Parsons said: “I would like to stay on 100 per cent. But I would like to bring more professionalism to the club. At times we have been lacklustre and lazy. There are no big things to change. Players should know their roles better.”
Wellington lst XV found it hard going during the season in Western Counties North, having switched from West section, and struggled to field a settled side – and did not play well in wet conditions. As soon as it was dry they improved considerably and beat fourth placed Stroud 3-0 at home recently.
They flirted with relegation for a spell but eventually finished 20 points clear of the drop zone.
One of the reasons for a disappointing season was injuries to key players – notably Parsons, skipper Micky Norman and Tim Jenkinson who brings authority behind the scrum and now plays on adrenalyn.
Matson were the outstanding side in the division and won the championship with a 100 per cent record, with Keynsham as runners-up.
Wellington were involved in a lot of close matches in which they failed to win. They got themselves into winning positions but could not complete the job.
Wiveliscombe ended their season on a high by beating Stothert and Pitt 63-3 at the Recreation Ground on Saturday to finish fifth in Somerset Premier
Coaches Peter and Brian Stone and Rob Weaver are expected to continue with a team which won nine of their last 11 matches.
