WELLINGTON will be looking to maintain their two-point lead over title rivals St Austell - and stretch it if possible - when they play at home to Honiton in Western Counties West on Saturday (2.30), writes Barry Knott.
With St Austell keeping up the pressure by beating Wiveliscombe 61-10 there is no room for complacency even though Honiton are struggling near the bottom of the table.
“Honiton only lost by one point at home to Wadebridge Camels at the weekend - and this was to a last-minute try,” said Wellington coach Allyn Chetland.
“It was a humdinger of a game at Kingsbridge and we were very pleased to win the game. They scored five tries to our four. We were chuffed to bits - particularly with getting a bonus point as well. It is not easy playing at Kingsbridge.”
Scrum half Dan Goldstone is not available against Honiton while Dan Lee has a recurrence of a knee injury and Ash Harney has a shoulder problem.
“We’ll have to wait and see how Dan and Ash are later this week, otherwise we’ll be at virtually full strength.”
Meanwhile, Wiveliscombe will be looking to regroup following their big loss at St Austell when they play at home to Cullompton.
Joint coach Peter Stone said: “We went there with eight second team players. We made a good start with the elements in our favour in the first 20 minutes but we couldn’t get the ball in the second half and also picked up another couple of injuries.
Tom Stone came off at half time with a shoulder injury and Matt Ellis suffered a twisted knee.
“We hope to have four or five back this week, including our captain John Ker who has been unavailable for a couple of weeks,” added Stone.
“We feel we can give anyone a game when we’re at full strength and that’s not been possible all season. But we still feel our position in the table is in our hands - we don’t have to rely on anyone else.
It’s important to win our home games.”
Wellington 2nd XV are away to their Keynsham counterparts in Somerset One while Wiveliscombe 2nd XV are away to Yeovil 2nd XV in Somerset Two South.
