WELLINGTON put up a spirited display, particularly in the second half, before losing 27-19 at home to Chard in their latest match in Counties One Western North.
Wellington went into the game bottom of the table while the South Somerset side were lying eighth, having won two of their five games.
Chard built up a 17-0 lead at half time before Wellington hit back to reduce the deficit to five points with tries by Mike Thurwell and Callum Warren, one of which was converted by Alex Davey.
Chard extended their lead with a converted try and penalty to make it 24-12 before Wellington again fought back with a try by Ash Harney, converted by Davey, to trail 27-19.
However, Wellington’s second-half efforts were not enough for them to win the game but they came mighty close after being off the pace before the interval.
Wellington face another tough game away to Midsomer Norton on Saturday, November 7.
