WELLINGTON will be chasing the season’s double over Tiverton when the sides clash in Western Counties West in Devon on Saturday, writes Barry Knott.
Both sides won over the weekend, Wellington at Paignton 19-12 and Tiverton 38-23 at home to Truro.
Despite some impressive displays in recent weeks, Wellington still have some work to do if they are going to catch at least two of the top three sides - Sidmouth, Crediton and St Austell - although it can be done.
“The boys had to dig deep to beat Paignton on Saturday, “ said Wellington coach Allyn Chetland. “They threw the kitchen sink at us but our defence was good.
“We’ve played them twice now and they certainly do not look like a side at the bottom of the table. We’ve played far worse sides than Paignton. We were five points down at half time but we scored three excellent tries in the second half.”
“Our game at Tiverton is going to be another tough one. There are no easy away games in this league.”
Wellington are eight points behind leaders Sidmouth, with both sides having seven games to play. Realistically though, Wellington must be looking to finish runners-up and be involved in an end of season play-off.
Wellington are expected to be at near full strength at Tiverton with only winger Ash Harney (damaged knee ligaments) likely to miss the game. Tiverton lost 29-23 at the Athletic Ground in early November.
Meanwhile, Wiveliscombe already look to have one foot in the door of Western Counties rugby.
They go into Saturday’s away game against Oldfield Old Boys with a 16-point lead at the top of Somerset Premier.
Wiveliscombe won 90-7 last time out against Hornets 2nd XV but know that it will be a much tougher
game against Oldfield who lost only 17-13 at the Recreation Ground in November.
Wellington 2nd XV, now close to the foot of Somerset One after some poor results, are home to second-placed Stothert and Pitt, while struggling Wiveliscombe 2nd XV will fancy their chances at home to Martock who have picked up only one more point than their rivals.
