TITLE-CHASING Wiveliscombe secured their 16th league victory of the season with a hard-earned 18-10 victory at Penryn on Saturday in Counties One Western West.

Wiveliscombe, with several changes to theirline-up, were made to work hard by the home team who are bottom of the league with Saltash who gave themselves hope with a home success over Kingsbridge.

Playing up the slope with heavy under foot conditions, Wiveliscombe found themselves 10-0 down midway through the half as after right-wing Jack Jones crossed for Penryn’s first try on ten minutes, the Borough followed added a second try when centre James Salisbury forced his way over Wivey’s try line after a period of pressure from the home team[s forwards.

However, Wivey were level by half-time following tries from captain Will Ellis and fellow front-row forward, hooker Tom Stone.

Underfoot conditions became increasingly heavy as the game progressed as both teams tried to move the ball, but all too often defences had the upper hand.

But Wiveliscombe are top for a reason and put themselves in front as space was created for youngster Jack Lee to pierce his way through to make it 15-10.

Both teams had their moments during the last quarter but it was Wivey who converted a penalty through Dan Quick to secure the victory ahead of Saturday’s trip to second-placed Paignton (2.30pm).

The South Devon side are nine points behind the village outfit after they secured a bonus-point victory over mid-table St Ives on Saturday.
