GROUP One matches (8p.m.) in the second round of the Wellington Ex-Services Skittles League’s Cyril Hicks Singles Competition at the RG Institute proved to be a fiercely competitive affair, with qualification only secured after a dramatic play-off.
John Pike led the way with an excellent 56, the standout score of the group, while four-time champion, John Lane (50) and Jason Powell (49) also produced strong performances to safely book their places for Finals Night.
The real drama came around the final qualifying spot, where Rob Higgs and Glen Escott both finished on 47. With nothing to separate them, a play-off hand was required, and it was five-time champion Higgs who held his nerve to edge through, leaving Escott narrowly eliminated despite a solid showing.
Elsewhere, James May (46) and former champion John Barker (43) were not far off the pace but ultimately fell short in a tightly packed group, while Jacob Sparks (36) found the alley tough going. The standard in this group was high throughout, with some players unfortunate to miss out.
The later session saw another competitive group, though slightly more clear-cut in terms of qualification. Sam Vile produced a superb 55 to top the standings, closely followed by Theo Ling with 53 and Craig Newstead with 49, all of whom progressed comfortably.
Darren Sparks secured the final qualifying spot with 44, doing enough to stay ahead of the chasing pack. Albert Hughes (40), Paul Robinson (38), and James Jones (37) were left behind in a group where mid-40s scoring was again the benchmark for progression. Overall, the group featured some strong scoring at the top, with Vile and Ling in particular carrying momentum into Finals Night. Those through the Finals Night (Thursday, April 23)Cyril : Jason Powell, John Pike, Rob Higgs, John Lane, Craig Newstead, Sam Vile, Darren Sparks, Theo Ling.
