WELLINGTON Tennis Club are celebrating their best competitive season in the West Somerset Tennis League in recent years .

And the club have now entered a mixed team in the North Somerset Tennis League for the winter season in the hope of more success.

Wellington A team finished second behind Trull A and ahead of Bridgwater A, Taunton and Trull B in Division One of the West Somerset League.

Members of their team were: Liz Deem, Sue Rackley, Yaz Cannell, James Cross, Connor Sellick and Kevin Jones. They were the only team to take four sets off champions Trull A in a match.

Last year the B team, who had to win a play-off to remain in Division Three, finished in a very commendable third place. Players were Margaret Staker, Aly Spiller, Amelia, David Norkett, Sam Ogilvie, Greg Sellers, David Goldsack and Liam Richards.

The men's team won all their matches and gained promotion to Division One.

The competitive play will also continue with in-house singles and mixed doubles box leagues which has been organised by Yaz Cannell and Liam Richards.

The club are hoping to inspire their junior players now and will be working with the coach to ensure all children will be offered more matchplay opportunities whether that is in-house tournaments or LTA tournaments.

Chair Sue Rackley said: "With strong competition from padel and pickleball, we need to help coach young tennis players to keep playing tennis. They are the future for tennis clubs."

*The Wellington club is based at Courtland Road and has three hard courts with floodlights. Online bookings are available with an extra charge when the floodlights are in use.

The courts are available from ten o’clock in the mornings until late in the evenings.
