COMPETITIVE tennis will be continuing throughout the winter at Wellington Tennis Club which is based within the Playing Fields - home of both the local cricket and football clubs.

Due to the success of the club’s teams in the West Somerset Tennis League, Chair Sue Rackley has taken a leap of faith and entered a team into the North Somerset Tennis League.

They have been entered in Division Nine where they will play against two teams from Burnham-on-Sea as well as the Wrington and Winscombe clubs.

"I am hoping we can field teams in all matches and expand our competitive opportunities, " says Sue Rackley.

She added: "Straight after the summer match season ended, the club created in-house singles and doubles box leagues matches which have been very popular. with club members."

LTA tournaments are also being held on many Saturday afternoons as well where players enter from surrounding counties.

Finally, the committee has now turned its attention to the junior coaching programme. The teenagers will now play box league singles matches among themselves.

Somerset LTA recently help trials for 8U, 9U and 10U for their county programme. Head coach Dan Sizer, encouraged some to attend and three children have been selected after they attended. So it is congratulations to Phoebe, Arthur and Robin.

Sue added, " The club wishes to offer every junior member the opportunity to experience competitive tennis whether that's within their lessons, in- house club tournaments, inter-club tournaments or LTA graded tournaments

“It will ensure they are engaged and applying their skills in a match scenario which is what tennis is all about."
