THE West Somerset Tennis League has started with Wellington Tennis Club's three teams already back in action.
Wellington B kicked off their Division Three season playing Bridgwater C at home. In the Mixed rubbers Greg Sellers and Margaret Staker won their match after clinching the tie-break.
Unfortunately, the new 1s - David Norkett and 15 year old Amelia - lost their rubber although it was a close match full of hard hitting and long rallies. The final score was 5-7, 3-6.
The Men's and Ladies rubbers were also extremely close but Bridgwater C came through to win both rubbers. The me’s result was 6-3, 7-5 and the ladies was 7-5, 6-4.
On the same night, six players played against six Wellington School players. The Wellington club were represented by Geoff Lee, Malcolm Steer, Charles St George, Yaz Cannell, William Spurway and David Rough.
The format was a round robin playing one set. The school's boys were stronger and won their rubbers while the girls lost all their matches. The final score was 6-3 to Wellington School.
The Men’s first match will be played on Friday, May 1, and there is a good pool of men eager to win their division.
“In the last few months we have had some strong players join us, so I a feeling positive about our performances this season,” said the Wellington club chair Sue Rackley.
*Wellington Tennis Club is an enthusiastic and family-friendly club offering a variety of daytime and evening sessions along with four hours of junior coaching, on Saturdays, and two hours on Thursdays, after school.
The club have many committed adults who enjoy both social and competitive tennnis and they will again be fielding three teams in the West Somerset League.
It also hosts LTA sanctioned junior tournaments and encourage their club juniors to take part in these.
