WELLINGTON gained a thrilling 30-24 home victory over Cullompton in the first round of the Papa John’s Cup at the Athletic Ground this afternoon (April 13).

Despite not being a full strength, Wellington led 22-5 at half time and increased their lead with an individual try by skipper for the day George Hodgson.

But Cullompton took advantage of some ill-discipline by Wellington to close the gap to 27-19 before Alex Davey landed a vital penalty to put Wellington 30-19 ahead. However, there was still time for Cullompton to score another try.

Ben Hayman and Toby Redwood also scored tries for Wellington who were also awarded a penalty try.
