WELLINGTON will almost certainly clinch the Somerset Division championship in the West of England Premier Cricket League if they beat bottom side Butleigh at home tomorrow (Sat, 12.30).
They will also be looking to maintain their fabulous 100 per cent record which has rocketed them to the top of the division, with a 43 point lead over second placed Chard.
"It would be great if we could be crowned champions at home," said club chairman Mark Salter yesterday. "I think the only thing that can stop us is rain.
"Our success this season has been built on a good balanced side. We can bat down to 11 and we have a number of players who can get us out of trouble. We have not always had things all our own way this season but there has always been someone capable of turning the game in our favour. That's happened a few times.
"Playing in the Bristol/Somerset division next season is going to be tough. We're not sure yet whether 'Dilly' (Sankeken Pathirana) will be available. He wants to come back but the rules about overseas' players are very complex."
While Wellington have won all 13 matches they have played this season - two have been cancelled - Butleigh have been on the winning side only twice and look certain to be relegated.
Wellington 2nd XI, who have a 31-point lead at the top of Division Four in the Somerset League, are away to Butleigh's second string who are also holding up the table.
Wellington 3rd XI, third in Division Seven Red, are away to Taunton 3rd XI who are one place below them with only 15 points separating the teams.
Wiveliscombe, strong candidates for promotion in Division Three of the Somerset League, are home to Taunton Deane 3rd XI.
In the first division of the West Somerset League, leaders Kilve are away to ninth-placed Winsford, while second division pacemakers Asbrittle are away to struggling Fitzhead who look like being relegated.
Division Three leaders Watchet are home to eighth-placed Wembdon while Sampford Arundel, top of Division Four, are home to Stoke St Mary who are at the other end of the table.
