POLICE are appealing for any witnesses or anybody with dashcam footage after two people abandoned a trailer carrying straw bales which overturned on the M5 motorway near Wellington on Bank Holiday Monday (August 28).

Motorists faced disruption following the incident, which happened at about 7.20 pm on the northbound carriageway between junctions 26 for Wellington and 25 for Taunton.

The trailer overturning forced the motorway to be closed in both directions for about an hour to ensure people were safe and to clear the debris.

There were no reports of any injuries.

An Avon and Somerset Constabulary spokesperson said: “We believe there were three people in the blue Kia Sorento car that was towing the trailer at the time of the collision.

“However two of them left the scene prior to police attendance.

“They were described as white males, in their 30s, of a large build and had facial hair.

“We believe there may have been people who took video footage of the other occupants as they left the scene and would ask them to please get in touch with us, plus any other witnesses or motorists with dashcam.

“If you can help us, please contact us online and call 101 and quote reference number 5223208657.”

Both Wellington fire appliances were called to the scene to help with the incident and on arrival the crews found the trailer carrying straw was on its side.

They made the area safe before helping other agencies to clear the carriageway using brushes, pitchforks, and their positive-pressure ventilation (PPV) fan, which is usually for pressurising the inside of a building and forcing smoke out of it.
