A BRIGHT and sunny evening at Wellington Bowling Club saw the Hawks and the Harriers come up against one another in the East of Exe Bowls League, writes Martin Speakman.

There was great excitement and a large crowd of enthusiastic supporters came to cheer on their team.

Many club members thought the Hawks were the favourites. Recently they have played well and their reputation came before them.

However, it was a very closely fought match and after 18 ends of highly competitive bowling, Brian Wombwell, Liz May, Allan Samuel and Mike Groves' Harriers crossed the line with three shots to spare, winning 66 – 63.

At that point there was a big cheer and then everyone gathered round the BBQ for some hot-dogs and drinks which club president Paul Kelly had organised.

The crestfallen Hawks flew away to lick their wounds and prepare for the return match in July . . . leaving the Harriers to celebrate their victory.
