THERE are eight teams in the Men's League at Wellington Bowling Club and they are all trying hard for top league places as the end of the indoor season draws near.
Table topping Bowlsheviks enjoyed a close victory over eighth placed Vikings. The Welly team, who were fifth, narrowly beat fourth placed Newbees. Second in the table Spoofers had a close victory over sixth placed Hemyock and Fun Loving Lads in third spot were the winners against seventh placed Cavaliers.
Dave Harrison, Martin Porter, Jay Merrell and Phil Ellis' high flying Bowlsheviks found themselves lagging behind at the beginning of their match against Phil Wiggan's bottom of the table Vikings. Bowlsheviks found themselves 4 – 2 down after five ends but they fought back hard and overtook to take a close victory by 14 shots to 9.
Spoofers were second in the table going into their match but they didn't have it all their own way against Tony Drawert, Adrian Hay, John Bendle and John Stevens' Hemyock.
Charlie Williams, John Lane, Steve Horrill and Darren Sparks' Spoofers were 2 – 3 down after three ends but they got their bowling act together and picked up the pace to win in a tight game 17 – 11.
Andy Copping, Simon Spalding, Ian Hollingsworth and Kevin Austin's Fun Loving Lads were on top form coming into their game. Steve Bradnum's Cavaliers found themselves in trouble from the start and the Fun Lovers won comfortably 27 – 5.
The Wellys and the Newbees were involved in a very close match. Ernie Windsor, Chris Thorne, Pete Nichols and Mike Connor's Newbees were leading 10 – 7 at the halfway point but Ian Stewart, Ron Elston, Paul Kelly and Graham Brown's Wellys got down to some serious bowls and overtook to pinch it after a close battle 16- 11.
